Unlike the contract items, this gift item will stay with you through each chapter, and each henchman will upgrade their respective item (technically swap it out for a stronger version) when you give them their target item for that chapter. If you complete their chapter quest (find and give them whatever doodad they talk about wanting), then they give you an equip-able item as a thanks for your help (some of these items, like Boddyknock's ring, are quite useful).
